|
What is high voltage? |
|
Voltage is the
difference of potential between two points.
High voltage is generally over 1000 volts DC
or AC. |
|
What do AC and DC mean again? |
AC =
Alternating Current. Applications: Houses
use this style.
DC = Direct Current. Applications: All
batteries
Pulsing DC Applications: computer signals,
electric fences |
|
Isn’t high voltage dangerous? |
|
Voltage
represents a difference of potential between
two objects. A static spark after shuffling
across a dry carpet could generate 5,000
volts. It is electrical current that can be
hazardous. KABA electric chargers only
output low level current far below UL
maximum allowable limits. |
|
How far can voltage jump? |
|
A general rule
of thumb is that under normal atmospheric
conditions, 71,000 volts would jump one
inch. |
|
What is pulsing DC? |
|
KABA chargers
send out one brief pulse every second. The
pulse is about 400/1,000,000ths in duration.
Then the charger shuts off for at least 1.0
seconds. Pulses have very low current. |
|
Is the KABA bird control system like
electric fence for cattle and horses? |
|
The concept is
identical and so is the reaction by the
animals. The electric fence chargers for
large animals are very powerful. KABA
chargers use significantly less power
because birds have a small body mass and
step upon the tape with their bare feet. |
|
What happens if KABA tape is accidentally
grounded to the metal frame of a building? |
|
The metal is
not electrified. Because the power is DC, it
only wants to return to the opposite
polarity on the charger or DC ground. |
|
Where is KABA best installed? |
|
Place KABA
close to the outside edges where a bird
would normally walk. For pigeons, stick tape
2” from the outside edge. If smaller birds
are the object, stick tape at the edge.
Place KABA where ever the birds sit most
frequently. If the birds move to other
locations, extend the existing system. |
|
Will the aluminum wires oxidize or corrode? |
|
No. The
aluminum wires are 99% pure. This type of
aluminum is used especially in electrical
applications and a characteristic of having
extremely high corrosion resistance.
|
|
Will salt air corrode the wires? |
|
Salt corrodes
most metals, even stainless. Aluminum is
used frequently in marine applications such
as off shore platforms and seawall
construction. These aluminum wires will
endure a great deal because by nature it has
extremely high corrosion resistance. |
|
Will it withstand the summer desert heat? |
|
Materials and
construction design have been selected and
tested for durability in heat and cold. |
|
Will it work when wet? |
|
Sometimes. The
more the tape is immersed, the voltage will
drop and come back up as it dries. Birds
stung by KABA tape in dry weather are not
daring enough to land on KABA in the rain.
|
|
Will a fuse blow if it arcs too often? |
|
Fuses are on
the AC input side, if at all. No fuse is on
the output side. The power controller is
designed to discharge energy whenever it
can. |
|
Is earth ground used by the KABA system? |
|
No. The
electric charger has DC power and ground
terminals. The DC ground terminal is
isolated from earth or common ground. |
|
Are fires possible? |
|
UL listed
electric chargers have to have short pulse
times and long spans of time between pulses.
This insures that heat cannot build up and
ignite combustible materials. Farmers and
ranchers operate miles of electric fence,
using powerful chargers, and weeds contact
the fence all the time and do not ignite.
KEEP KABA PRODUCTS AWAY FROM EXPLOSIVE
GASSES AND MATERIALS. |
|
Will debris cause arcing? |
|
Dry debris
should not. Wet debris might. Maintain your
KABA system for maximum performance. |
|
Should the tape be cleaned periodically? |
|
Yes, for best
performance. |
|
Will ice or snow cause the system to stop
working? |
|
The voltage
level can decrease temporarily with snow
cover. Birds in the winter spend most of
their time on a south facing wall and the
snow melts away quickly. A neighborhood
birds that experienced the KABA tape before
the snow fell is likely to never return rain
or shine! |
|
How long will KABA tape last? |
|
About 5 to 20
years. All materials are selected for their
performance in UV, heat, cold and rain.
Acrylic adhesives and films are proven to
last in outdoor weather. |
|
What does it cost? |
|
See our
distributors for pricing information. When
compared to spikes, gels or wires, the price
per foot is comparable. |
|
Is KABA good against all birds? |
|
YES! KABA is
effective against all birds, not just
specific species. |
|
Is it safe? |
|
Yes. KABA
systems use manufactured electric chargers
that meet UL specifications for safety. KABA
chargers use 85% less energy than the safety
levels specified by UL. |
|
What electrical codes and regulations need
to be followed? |
|
Consult you
local building codes. |
|
Is KABA tape UL listed? |
|
The electric
chargers are UL listed for human safety and
fire prevention. KABA tape is not UL listed. |
|
Are solar power chargers available? |
|
Yes. Solar
panels generate electricity to charge the
battery. |
|
What kind of jumper wire is required? |
|
High voltage
wire should be used in all installations.
|
|
How are corners made? |
|
Corners are
made by folding the tape back on it self and
twisting the end in the next direction of
travel. All this is done without connectors
or splicing. |
|
How are connections sealed? |
|
KABA Tape
crimps are loaded with an anti oxidant paste
called Penetrox. This paste keeps the oxygen
out of the connection and eliminates
oxidation. |
|
How many feet of tape will a power
controller support? |
|
Each power
controllers has various distance
expectations. A minimum voltage level should
be at least 1300 volts or 1.3KVDC. Consult
with KABA Tape technical support for any
questions. |
|
Why is KABA different from other electric
bird track designs? |
|
The
differences are very clear on what the wires
are held to. Track and tape are very
different. KABA tape is flexible, thin and
can go places and do things that track
designs simply cannot. |
|
Will the KABA system work against other
animals? |
|
The KABA
chargers and KABA tapes are designed for
small animals or pets. |
|
What length rolls does it come in? |
|
Fifty foot
rolls, on a 3 inch cardboard core with a
final roll OD of 8 inches. |
|
Are there any special tools? |
|
No. Scissors,
crimping tool, wire stripper, high voltage
tester and ohm meter are it. |
|
How long will the KABA Clear stick? |
|
Tests show
that adhesion strength should climb over the
next 20-30 years. |
